About Us

Hereford Kayak Club has been established since the Mid 1970`s starting on the banks of the Wye by a few like mined people. It moved into its current premises at Hereford Rowing Club during the 80s and are is now an affiliated club enjoying the facilities that are available at the Rowing Club. We house our club boats and safety equipment along with individual’s personal boats in one of their sheds.

Over the years the focus of the club has changed and now we specialise in the racing side of the sport, however many of our members still kayak for pleasure and as a means to keep fit or enjoy the Wye and its wild life. Members range in age from 11 years to 70 plus so there is opportunity for all.

The club has several qualified club coaches and is currently working towards the British Canoeing Quality Club status a nationally recognised standard. The Club participates in the West Midlands Marathon System. Whereby, clubs from our region host races which are divided into ability divisions, so there is scope for all ages from beginners to international level. Races start from 4 miles. Club members also have the opportunity to race at the National Water Sports Centre in Nottingham to compete in the 5 nationally held Sprint regattas in 200, 500, & 1,000 metre race.

Over the years members from Hereford Club have competed in many internationally acclaimed events Yukon River Quest (Canada). Sella descent (Spain), Liffey Descent (Ireland) Artic Canoe race (Finland) Around Madeira sea race and the Devizes to Westminster 125mile race achieving many podium positions and earning the club a reputation for competing in endurance events. Members have also been selected to represent Great Britain in both Sprint and Marathon events travelling as far a field as Brazil, South Africa and Australia, where they have won world championship individual medals in both disciplines.
